All of the costs that go into a wedding can add up pretty quick and if there are any ways that you can cut out some of the expenses of a few things along the way you might just be surprised how much money you can actually save. A few bucks here and a few bucks there and boo yah — you’ve got some serious savings that you can literally take to the bank.
One of the things that many couples end up spending a lot of their money on is wedding photography. I mean, it makes sense to get yourself some good pictures of your wedding and once it’s all over (which is really, really fast) you’ll be glad that you have them. Most couples feel this way going into their wedding, which is why many of them also probably end up spending too much money on getting their photographer. Don’t get me wrong, making sure that you’re getting a good photographer is always a good idea and a lot of times you get what you pay for, but you can also stay well within your budget while still getting a great set of shots that you will end up cherishing forever.
Finding wedding photographers isn’t all that hard and there always seems to be plenty of people who at least claim to be one of the best around. But, finding wedding photographers who are both good and affordable is something that’s a little harder to find. Here are some tips that will hopefully help you find someone to shoot your wedding without making you exceed your budget for your big day.
Ask Around…A LOT
The first thing that you should do before you get into any other type of searching would be to ask your married friends, family, co-workers and whoever else you know all about who they had do their wedding photography. Be sure to ask them about how much they cost, what kind of style they are, where they will travel to for a shoot and also be sure to ask them to see a few examples of their work. Most legit wedding photographers will have some type of online portfolio or blog that you can take a look at so that you can get a good gauge of their style and/or their pricing.
It also might be a good idea to see if there is some type of referral discount that you could get if you’re recommended to the particular wedding photographer by someone who has used them before.
Keep An Eye Out On Facebook For Ideas and Styles
If Facebook is good at one thing, it’s spreading photos around the Internet. If you have other friends of yours on Facebook who have gotten married (or are getting married soon), be sure to take a look at some of the wedding photos that come from them once they’re posted and use the opportunity to do a couple of things:
- Get ideas from more expensive photographers that you can share with a photographer that you can afford
- Get leads on photographers who have been used for weddings that are around your same budget. Also, don’t be scared to reach out to them if you think that they could be a fit for your wedding, too.
These are both good ways to find an affordable wedding photographer doing something that you’re probably already doing anyways — wasting time on Facebook.
Set Up Group Discounts
If you’re anything like me, when I was getting married I also knew of several other couples who were also going to be getting married around the same time that I was. If I was smarter back then, I could of potentially got a few of these couples together so that we could all schedule some time with a photographer that we all liked and wanted to use at a cheaper rate.
If you have the ability to bring the photographer more guaranteed business, then they’re more than likely going to give you all a much lower price in return. The photographer will be getting some more paying shoots lined up and you and the rest of the couples you know will be getting a killer deal. Sounds like a good idea to me.
The College Discount
One other way that you could potentially get your hands on a good photographer for an affordable price would be to check out any local colleges and see what there are any photography students who are interested in doing some work on the side. This isn’t always easy to do as many college students aren’t quite as easy to get in touch with as you would think they would be. But, if you can get in touch with a few young and talented photographers, you could end up getting some great photos as a ridiculously cheaper price than most over wedding photographers.
Just be sure to really make sure that you know what type of student you’re going to be working with and if you don’t quite feel comfortable letting them shoot your wedding, see if they’ll meet up several days beforehand to snap some test shots that they can use in their portfolio.
I hope these tips help you find the right wedding photographer at the right price. Be sure to let us know if you have any questions about anything I said and have an awesome wedding!
